The heirloom finish creates an antiqued appearance using stains, glazing and distressing. Before the finish is applied, the kitchen cabinets are subjected to a distressing technique to give it a timeworn look. Sanding, denting and chiseling the edges and corners give the wooden cabinets imperfections. Glaze is then applied to accentuate the details of the door. To create a more rustic and aged appearance, more imperfections may be added.
Some popular varieties of wood which look great with an unfinished look are cherry, maple, oak, hickory and pine. Exotic woods like ebony, mahogany and bamboo also have a distinct appealing color and graining pattern which can lend a unique visual interest to kitchens.
